Weston’s One World After-School Programs
 
Weston Youth Services is pleased to offer IN-PERSON WOW! After-School programs for students in Grades 6-8 at Weston Middle School this winter Please note that enrollment is limited in order to keep class size small and classes will be filled on a first-come, first -served basis
 
Registration:
Online registration will open on Wednesday, November 16th at 10:01 a.m. If a program is full, you still may register and your child's name will automatically be placed on the wait-list (No payment is required at this time). If space does become available, you will be notified via email.
 
You will see a Yellow tab labeled WOW Registration on the right side of the home page when registration opens. Please click the tab to begin registration.
 
Important Note: If you do not have an account established with Weston Youth Services, you will need to set up an account online once the registration systems opens at 10:01 a.m. on Wednesday, November 16th The system will ask for your email address and generate a temporary password which will then be emailed to you so you can proceed with registration. The system will not allow you to set up an account before registration goes live.
 
Fees:
Please see each course listing for specific fees. ALL materials are included in class fee.
Financial Aid is available. Financial Aid is available; please contact Allison Lisbon, Director of Social Services, at 203-222-2663 or to inquire about eligibility for assistance.
 
Payment:
  • ALL payments must be made online by credit card via our secure site. 
  • Full payment of program fees must be made within twenty-four (24) hours of registration.  The system has been set up to automatically delete unpaid registrations after twenty-four (24) hoursWhen a registration has been deleted due to non-payment, a system-generated email will be sent stating:
"This is a notification that the registration for (registrants first name and last initial) has been deleted due to non-payment on (date and time that registration was deleted).”
 
Refund:
Once a class begins, we do not issue refunds or credits. If you cancel your child’s registration prior to the start date of a program, you will be charged a $25.00 administrative and processing fee.
         
Program Dates:

Class Length:
Please check individual programs for descriptions, room assignments, start dates, and program end times.
 
Dismissal:
Students will be dismissed from the front entrance doors. Please be prompt in picking up your child as our instructors have commitments after class.

Important Information:
 
  1. In the event of an early dismissal due to inclement weather or any other school emergency, all after-school programs will be cancelled and children will be sent home per regular school dismissal plans. In the event of a cancellation, we will send a reminder via email and also post this information on the Weston Youth Services website. We will make every effort to make up missed classes due to cancellations.
  2. There is no nurse on duty after normal school hours. In the event of illness or emergency treatment, we will call 911 and then contact parents, or the emergency contact if necessary. If your child has any special medical needs, please contact Charlene Monn at 203-222-2586 prior to the start of the session.
  3. Weston Youth Services reserves the right to cancel a class due to lack of student enrollment. If insufficient enrollment causes an activity to be canceled, participants will receive a full refund.
  4. If a student is dismissed for disciplinary reasons or withdraws from the school or the program, the entire program fee is forfeited.

Monday Program
8-week session
January 9th – March 13th (no class January 19th and February 20th)
 
 
NEW! Sci-Fi and Beyond (6th – 8th grade)
Maximum # of participants: 10 students
Fee: $ 168.00

Are you are a fan of Star Wars, Star Trek, Interstellar, or The Martian, Dune?  Do you love watching, reading, and writing Sci-fi, building new worlds in your mind or on paper? Then this class is for you! You will start from the macro: your planet, its solar system, its bodies of water and the contents, the weather patterns, the geography. Then… the micro: its inhabitants, its history and origin story, characters and finally plot.  By the end of the 8-week session,  after tweaking and revising using "positive" input from the class and from the instructor, everyone will have completed a short sci-fi or fantasy story. Bring your laptops and your imagination to class each week and join writer Nora Raleigh Baskin!
 
Instructor:
Nora Raleigh Baskin is the award-winning author of fifteen novels for children and young adults. She taught creative writing for many years, and speaks to schools and libraries across the country about the healing power of words and story.
 
 
Tuesday Program
11-week session
January 3rd – March 21st (no class Feb. 21st)
 
 
Battles & Beyond (6th – 8th grade)
Maximum # of participants: 12 students

Step into the past with Battles and Beyond! In this 9-week program, students will travel back in time to learn about key battles in history with DIG’s own Dan Starbuck Pelletier! We'll learn about the tactics and strategies used in a specific battle, and imagine what it was like living during that time. We'll divide into small groups and recreate the various battles with different decisions and strategies than the Generals made at that time and see what the new outcome may have been if we fought in the battle.

Wednesday Programs

NEW! Jr. CEOs (6th thru 8th grade)
Minimum #/ Maximum # of participants:  8 minimum / 12 maximum

How cool would it be for you to be the boss at Apple or Nike for a day? In this leadership program, you can! Students will act as CEOs for leading companies and collaborate to make strategic recommendations to address real business issues. Case studies will include popular companies and examine the role of female and minority CEOs. Students will enhance their problem-solving skills, develop business savvy and cultivate a strategic mindset as future leaders.

Sitter Safety (6th – 8th grade)
Maximum # of participants: 12 students
Fee: $ 110.00
Note: This is a 5-week program with several different session dates.

Session II: January 4th – February 1st or
Session III: March 1st – March 29th
 
A very popular program with Middle School students, please join us this winter for the return of Sitter Safety. This 5-week program will cover:

•   American Heart Association (AHA) First Aid Certification along with Hands Only CPR
•   Infant and Toddler Child Care
•   Emergency Situations, including a visit from the Weston Police Department
•   Child Development and Behavior
 
There are three requirements to pass the Sitter Safety Course in order to receive a certificate: 
 
1.      Completion of attendance at all 5 sessions (unless parents notify course instructor)
2.      Completion of a written final exam.
3.      Supervised baby-sitting In-Service Project with the return of completed questionnaires. 
 
Note: Students can register for Session II or Session III this winter.
We will also have a Monday spring session that begins on April 24th that you can register for.
